Oscars 2012

The Artist wins Best Picture, Director and Actor

Silent movie takes five awards, while Meryl Streep wins Best Actress for portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Best picture: The Artist

Should win: The Artist. Michel Hazavanicius's celebration of Hollywood's past has been dismissed as a piece of cinematic fluff but is fluff a bad thing? The Artist is a clever, beguiling and thoroughly enjoyable piece of fluff. Honourable mention to Drive, which didn't get nominated but is our second favourite film of the year (you'll never get into a lift with Ryan Gosling again).

The Artist, a black and white tribute to Hollywood's golden age, is the first silent film to take the main award since the Oscars began 83 years ago.

Best director: Michel Hazavanicius

Should win: Michel Hazavanicius, for making fluff with wit and flair.

Best actor: Jean Dujardin

Should win: Gary Oldman for his melancholy spy George Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but the man who should win isn't even on the list - Michael Fassbender, whose performance as a sex addict in Shame was the best of the year.

Best actress: Meryl Streep

Should win: Meryl Streep, although as a Scot who lived through the worst excesses of Thatcherism, it pains me to write it.

Best supporting actress: Octavia Spencer

Should win: Melissa McCarthy. For this line: "It's coming out of me like lava!" In fact, it's a crime that Bridesmaids doesn't feature in the best picture, best director and best actress categories.

Best supporting actor: Christopher Plummer

Nokia 808 Pure View Phone with 41-Megapixel Camera

Nokia 808 Pure View Phone Has a 41-Megapixel Camera. FORTY-ONE ACTUAL MEGAPIXELS.

Nokia has announced a new smartphone, the 808 PureView, which has an unprecedented 41-megapixel camera and is expected to launch in Europe in May.

The €450 device, however, which was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, runs on software that Nokia is phasing out in favour of Windows Phone.

Mary McDowell, the firm’s executive vice president for mobile phones, said that the firm’s engineers had been working on the product “for years”.
She said it was “natural” to assume that its technology would be used in other Nokia products in the future, although she declined to be drawn specifically on whether it was “when or if” the company would produce a Windows Phone with such imaging capabilities.
At 41mp, the phone is able to shoot images that Nokia claims can be printed at “poster size”. Files, however, condense four or five pixels into one, and Nokia claims they are smaller than equivalent products from rivals. A Carl Zeiss lens shoots in continuous focus HD video, at 1080p.

The 808 uses the Symbian platform, which Chief Executive Steven Elop described as “burning” before he changed the company’s strategy to use Microsoft’s rival software. In developing markets, however, Symbian remains popular, and Ms McDowell said the device built on Nokia’s existing global reputation for “excellent imaging technology”.

She added that while the device was larger than its rivals, it was still sized to fit in pockets, rather than replace a full-size camera.

The device uses a 1.3GHz processor, comes with 16GB of storage and runs a 4" screen at 360 x 640, which is below HD resolution.

Nokia also announced that it was expanding its range of Windows Phone devices for Europe. The Lumia 900, currently available be America, will be launched in a UK variant, and the 610 will be the cheapest Windows Phone device on the market.

'do a barrel roll' on Google

The expression " do a barrel roll" has become a trending topic on Twitter after internet users discovered a new feature on Google that makes the screen perform a 360-degree spin on typing the phrase into the search box.

According to the Telegraph, the same effect can be achieved by entering "Z or R twice" into the search bar.

It is the latest such gimmick to appear on Google, following a similar amusement in which users could adjust the angle of the screen by entering the word "tilt" as a search term.

The barrel roll game does not seem to function on all browsers but appears to work best using Firefox and Chrome.

The so-called Easter egg is a nod to Star Fox 64, the 1997 Nintendo game, in which a space pilot rabbit called Peppy tells character Fox McCloud to "do a barrel roll".

A Google spokesperson said the purpose of the new gimmick is mainly to entertain its users, adding that it will remain in place for a while.

"Today's fun query, 'do a barrel roll', was created by a Google software engineer with the primary goal of entertaining users, while showcasing the power of CSS3, a presentation feature of modern browsers."

Feng Shui for a wealthy life

De-clutter your home and make space for positive energy to come in and reside, suggests Meenakshi Agarwal

More and more home owners are now opting for the ancient Chinese science of Feng Shui to plan out their homes. This is because even a few minor changes that Feng Shui suggests bring about a remarkable positive change in one's life.

A family residing in a posh locality of south Mumbai too have experienced this miraculous change in their lives, merely by following a few principles of Feng Shui. The head of the family sought Feng Shui solutions for a gamut of problems. He recounted that the family had simply stopped growing in wealth or making any progress career-wise. He had a marriageable daughter, another in college and a school going son. He even mentioned that in the present scenario, it would have been impossible for him to carry out any major changes as per Vaastu Shastra or Feng Shui. So, he asked for solutions that could be easily implemented. This is where the beauty of Feng Shui lies. The idea is not to disturb the basic spirit of the house by suggesting breaking of walls, etc., but to bring about drastic changes in your life with the slightest change in your environment.

When I visited their house, I found that their three-BHK home was cluttered with old clothes, mementos, gifts, et al. They seemed to have never thrown away anything at all. So, the family was instructed to discard whatever wasn't required to make some space in their house. Following which, the family removed old unwanted clothes, chipped crockery and broken showpieces. They spent hours disposing all the gifts, the decorative trays, dusty candles, frayed cushion covers, outgrown sneakers, etc. The de-cluttering process went on till two weeks and after that the house looked like a changed place, without having made a single alteration. Post this, a few things were rearranged and the house was given a wet cleaning. Previously, every visible surface of the house as well as its nooks and crannies had been jammed with unwanted and unnecessary things. However, the de-cluttering created a lot of space in their home for positive energy to come in and reside.

Thus, in a few months time, things began to look up for the family.

They celebrated their elder daughter's wedding within six months. The second daughter settled in her career and the father's business too picked up. With better income and prospects, they gradually implemented the other changes suggested to them, such as a fresh coat of paint, changing the colour of their upholstery and repairing leaking pipes. In simple words, Feng Shui is all about ushering in positive energy (read that as wealth, health and good luck) into your living space and allowing it to reach everyone in the family.

Heart attack symptoms differ in men, women

The symptoms of heart attack in women differ from that of men as fewer females experience chest pain, a new study has claimed.

Overall men have significantly more heart attacks, but under the age of 55 women are more likely to die from one.

According to a study of more than one million people in the US, without displaying the classic chest pain symptoms of a heart attack, some women may not be getting the right kind of treatment.

The research found that among younger women, those aged under 55, the differences in symptoms with men of the same age were striking.

Overall, 42 per cent of women did not experience chest pain compared with 30 per cent of men.

Once admitted, the study found that women were more likely to die than men from the same age group.

The study adds to evidence that women can experience quite different symptoms to men.

"Optimal recognition and timely management of myocardial infarction (MI), especially for reducing patient delay in seeking acute medical care, is critical," the BBC quoted the authors of the study as saying.

"The presence of chest pain/discomfort is the hallmark symptom of MI.

Patients without chest pain/discomfort tend to present later, are treated less aggressively, and have almost twice the short-term mortality compared with those presenting with more typical symptoms of MI," they said.

In fact the average age of women admitted to hospital in the study was 74, compared with 67 for men.

Cathy Ross, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said a heart attack did not necessarily mean dramatic and excruciating chest pains.

"Symptoms vary; for some the pain is severe and yet others may feel nothing more than a mild discomfort or heaviness. The most important thing to remember is if you think you're having a heart attack, call 999," Ross said.

"Younger women may need to heed that advice more than most because they appear to be less likely to have chest pains.

"Their symptoms can be overlooked by inexperienced medical staff because heart attacks in young women are rare.

"More research will hopefully identify why there are such variations in the way heart disease affects men and women," she added.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. (ANI).

Drink coffee to cut diabetes risk

Want to stave off diabetes? Drink four cups of coffee a day, recommends a new study.

Previous researches suggested that drinking coffee cuts diabetes risk but there were conflicting results on whether it protects or promotes chronic diseases such as cancer.

Now, a team in Europe claims to have found that moderate consumption of coffee everyday may lower a person’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those drinking it occasionally or not at all.

In fact, drinking coffee can cut the risk of developing diabetes by nearly 30 per cent, says the study which has also revealed that the drink does not increase the risk of heart disease or cancer, the Daily Mail reported.

For their study, the researchers recruited 42,659 people. The volunteers, who took part in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Germany, were followed up for almost nine years on average. During that time, there were 1,432 cases of type 2 diabetes diagnosed, 394 heart attacks, 310 strokes cases and 1,801 cancer cases.

Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day — caffeinated and decaffeinated — compared with less than one cup was not linked to a higher risk of developing a chronic disease, the findings revealed.

A lower risk of 20-30 per cent of developing type 2 diabetes was linked to moderate consumption of both kinds of coffee, according to the findings published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Ten countries contribute to the EPIC study, including two centres in Germany which carried out the latest analysis.

Euan Paul of British Coffee Association said: “This study adds to the growing scientific data that suggests moderate coffee consumption, four to five cups of coffee per day, is safe and does not increase risk of chronic diseases.”

Human Mind

Some Nice Thoughts !!!

Sweet words are easy to say,
Sweet things are easy 2 buy,
but sweet people are difficult to find.
Life ends when U stop dreaming,
hope ends when U stop believing,
love ends when U stop caring,
friendship ends when U stop sharing.
So share this with whom ever U consider a friend.
To love without condition,
to talk without intention,
to give without reason

and to care without expectation

is the heart of a true friend.
Keep smiling
“Happiness is not something you find, it’s something you create…”

54th Grammys Dedicated To Whitney Houston

Adele, who captured the world's heart with an album about a broken romance, emerged as the top winner at Sunday's Grammy Awards, winning six trophies including the prestigious trifecta of record, song and album of the year. The music industry honored its biggest stars on a night marked by the loss of singer Whitney Houston at Grammy awards 2012.

Organisers of the Grammy Awards scrambled through the weekend to dedicate the 54th show to the late Whitney Houston. The 48-year-old American singing icon was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room a day before the awards show. LL Cool J began the awards night with a prayer for Houston, saying that there had been a death in the Grammy family. Houston had won and performed at the Grammys numerous times in the past, and is considered by many to be the greatest female vocalist of all time.

Google building secret lab

Google is reportedly working on a secret laboratory at its California headquarters worth 120 million dollars, which the internet search giant will use to test a range of new experimental products.

The new lab, which is already under construction, will include buildings that are screened against external radio waves and can be used to test advanced new wireless projects for the home.

The company has already demonstrated new concepts for the 'Android@Home' brand, which would allow users of Google mobile phones to control light switches, music systems and domestic appliances.

According to The Telegraph, Google is also modifying a separate lab as part of its advanced 'Project X' scheme and is set to include as yet unspecified 'precision optical technology'.

It is also building new anechoic and thermal chambers to test sound and radiation patterns, the paper said.

Google also plans to include a 'Google Experience Center', that would offer meeting rooms and a history of the company's achievements, aimed at major and prospective clients.

The center will be able to cater for up to 900 VIPs, the report said.

The project is part of an 800,000 square foot plan to refurbish Google's campus.

Me and My Boss

When I Take a long time to finish, I am slow,
When my boss takes a long time, he is thorough
When I don’t do it, I am lazy,
When my boss does not do it, he is busy,
When I do something without being told, I am trying to be smart,
When my boss does the same, he takes the initiative,
When I please my boss, I am apple polishing,
When my boss pleases his boss, he is cooperating,
When I make a mistake, I’ am an idiot.
When my boss makes a mistake, he’s only human.
When I am out of the office, I am wondering around.
When my boss is out of the office, he’s on business.
When I am on a day off sick, I am always sick.
When my boss is a day off sick, he must be very ill.
When I apply for leave, I must be going for an interview
When my boss applies for leave, it’s because he’s overworked
When I do good, my boss never remembers,
When I do wrong, he never forgets

Nalanda - World's most ancient university

Nalanda, is famous as the ancient seat of learning. The ruins of the world's most ancient university lies here which is 62 km from Bodhgaya and 90 km south of Patna.

Nalanda, one of the first great universities recorded in history was established in Takshila, India in 700BC. This was first residential international university of the world, 2,000 teachers and 10,000 monks students from all over the Buddhist world lived and studied here. The Gupta kings patronized these monasteries, built in old Kushan architectural style, in a row of cells around a courtyard. Emperor Ashoka and Harshavardhana were some of its most celebrated patrons who built temples, monasteries and viharas here. Recent excavations have unearthed elaborate structures here. An International Center for Buddhist Studies was established here in 1951. The subjects taught at Nalanda University covered every field of learning, and it attracted pupils and scholars from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey.

HEART TOUCHING STORY...

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy's father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad yelled:
"Why did U take all this time to come? Don't U know that my son's life is in danger? Don't U have any sense of responsibility?"

The doctor smiled & said:
"I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call...... And now, I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work"

"Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would U calm down? If your own son dies now what will U do??" said the father angrily

The doctor smiled again & replied: "I will say what Job said in the Holy Book "From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God". Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God's grace"

"Giving advises when we're not concerned is so easy" Murmured the father.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy,
"Thank goodness!, your son is saved!" And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his way running. "If U have any question, ask the nurse!!"

"Why is he so arrogant? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I ask about my son's state" Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: "His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was in the burial when we called him for your son's surgery. And now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's burial."

Moral-Never judge anyone..... because U never know how their life is & what they're going through"

One Of The Best Arguments.!! I have ever read

Don’t miss even a single word…. It’s Too good

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and…..

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes..

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t. How is this God good then? Hmm?
(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From….God…

Prof: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son…Have you ever seen God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student: No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn’t exist.
What do you say to that, son?

Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student: And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student: No sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture the after becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat..
But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright
light, flashing light…..But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought.. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is
not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it sir… The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

I believe you have enjoyed the conversation…and if so…you’ll probably want your friends/colleagues to enjoy the same…won’t you?….this is a true story, and the
student was none other than …….

Yuvraj was 2011 World Cup's real champion

India's remarkable ODI World Cup triumph last year was a team effort. But if there's one player who shone brighter than the rest, it was Yuvraj Singh. He was the prime reason why India danced on the streets on the night of April 2, 2011.

Right through his career, Yuvraj has been known as a batsman who can bowl a bit. But during the 2011 campaign, he was among the team's premier strike bowlers. Thanks to him, we never missed an all-rounder.

In the final, he had the best bowling figures in the side claiming K Sangakkara and T Samaraweera.  In the semis, he claimed the crucial wickets of Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan to put India back in the hunt. And in the quarters earlier, he was again India's most successful bowler taking the wickets of Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke.

And that's not to forget his fiver against Ireland (five for 31). He followed that up with a 50 not out to earn the man of the match award in that game. In fact, he performed consistently with the bat throughout the championship; his match-winning 113 against West Indies being the best. In all he scored four 50s and one century in the tournament and deservingly got the player of the series award.

Yuvraj is well known for 6 sixes in 6 balls. And he plays magnificently on the field perform great in all aspects from his stylish batting to impressive bowing and remarkable fielding. Yuvraj is the real match winner not only in world cup but also in netwest series in england T20 world cup and under 19 world cup which he has proved.

There can be no greater achievement for a cricketer than this: being the champion-player for your country a world cup-winning campaign.

The post-triumph celebrations, though, focussed more on Tendulkar and Dhoni. But if you look at the performance during the entire championship, Yuvraj was The Man who had made it happen more than anybody else in the side - no offence meant to Zaheer, Gambhir, Dhoni, Tendulkar, Munaf, Sehwag, Raina, Kohli, Harbhajan and the rest. They were fabulous too.

Now the left-hander from Chandigarh is in the US undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. As sports-lovers, we must ensure that Yuvraj knows that every cricket fan is with him. That we are all praying he recovers fast and recovers well. We know he will.
